SSF Summer Research Internship 2023

Are you ready to explore your future career in academic medicine? SSF is offering a unique internship opportunity that allows participants to work directly with a full-time clinical research physician.  On August 15-17, Interns will attend our Mini Medical School Program.  On day 1, interns will begin developing a multi-disciplinary research project that enhances their experience in scholarly writing format, academic journal review, statistical comprehension, anatomical analysis, and more. Students will have the opportunity to dissect real human cadaveric specimens, work with the latest technology in a state-of-the-art medical facility, and network with leading physicians, residents, and fellows.

End-of-summer presentations: At the conclusion of their project, students give formal, conference-style presentations describing their research projects at the Swedish Neuroscience Institute's Research Meeting. Attendees of this meeting include partnering neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, surgical fellows and other health professionals who support our research efforts.

 

About Our Research Program

In our anatomical research facility, medical and surgical problems are examined and alternative anatomical solutions developed to solve various issues that face clinicians and surgeons alike.  The Seattle Science Foundation boasts a large group of clinical research fellows from partnering medical centers who together are helping change the way we move forward with our understanding of human anatomy. This collaborative research and subsequent discoveries have resulted in hundreds of peer-reviewed publications in major medical journals as well as the publication of many clinical/surgical textbooks.

Program Highlights

•  Gain surgical experience
• Explore different aspects of academic medicine
• Watch live surgical demonstrations performed by leading surgeons
• Participate in a hands-on anatomy lab using cadaveric specimens
• Discuss medical ethics with practicing physicians
• Review medical terminology
• Tour the Swedish Hospital medical facilities

Upon completion of the program, interns will gain:

• Published video of your research presentation
• Letter of Recommendation
• Certificate of Achievement
• Group Photo of your Internship group
• Special invitation to SSF's Hands-On Cadaver Courses

Eligibility Requirements
No prerequisite background in dissection is required. It is recommend that participants must be at least 16 years old and entering their junior or senior year in high school. Current college or university students are also encouraged to attend. Internship openings are for three-week intervals. International applicants must have appropriate visas in place before applying.  We are unable to provide guidance or assistance with visas.

The Summer Research Internship will take place Monday-Friday, from 9 am - 3 pm and includes the August 15-17 Mini Medical School.  Tuition is $3500.

Location
The Seattle Science Foundation is located on the Cherry Hill Campus of Swedish Hospital at 550 17th Avenue, James Tower, Suite 600 in Seattle, Washington. Parking is available in the garage on 16th Avenue between Cherry and Jefferson at a maximum fee of $17.00. From I-5 (northbound and southbound), James will become Cherry Street. Turn right (south) on 16th Avenue. Turn right into the main garage entrance.
