Overview

This summer intensive course will focus on minimally invasive tubular microsurgical decompression techniques plus dural repair. Microscopes and tubular retractors have become common in spine surgery as they offer a lower-risk, minimally invasive option for many procedures. At this course, a small class of just 15 students will learn tubular approaches in an exciting extension of the world-famous NYC-MISS course held every December. This Summer Master Class will provide intensive, in-depth training, using real microsurgical tools and instruments, under the supervision of experts in the field. You will be working on advanced RealSpine simulation models in the high-tech Weill Cornell Medicine Neurosurgical Innovations and Training Center.

Strictly limited to 15 participants, the course assures everyone plenty of hands-on time. All participants will have the opportunity to perform each procedure. One rotation for each group will use virtual reality headsets.

Target Audience: Designed for residents, fellows, early-career orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons, as well as more advanced spine specialists who would like to gain microscopic and tubular experience.

Acknowledgment Statement: This event is made possible through the generous sponsorship of our industry partners. Please note that it is a vendor-sponsored event and is not hosted by or affiliated with Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM).

Dr. Kevin Foley is a professor of neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, and biomedical engineering at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tennessee. He serves as chairman of Semmes Murphey Clinic, director of complex spine surgery at Semmes Murphey, emeritus director of the spine fellowship program for the University of Tennessee Department of Neurosurgery, and medical director for the Medical Education & Research Institute.

In addition to a full-time surgery practice, Dr. Foley is actively involved in research in minimally invasive spine surgery, disc regeneration, image-guided spinal surgery, robotics, spinal biomechanics, and neurosurgical outcomes. He has authored more than 40 book chapters and more than 245 scientific journal publications. He is the inventor of many medical devices and biologic products and has been issued more than 180 patents by the US Patent and Trademark Office. Several of his inventions have advanced the field of minimally invasive spine surgery, to include tubular retractors, percutaneous screw fixation using detachable extenders, and tapered and expandable interbody implants. He has lectured at more than 700 scientific meetings and educational workshops and has been a visiting professor and invited lecturer at several universities in the USA and abroad. He serves on the board of directors for several medical device and biologics companies to include Discgenics, RevBio, and Curiteva. In recognition of his achievements, Dr. Foley was honored with the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) Cushing Award for Technical Excellence and Innovation in Neurosurgery in 2019, as well as the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies William Beecher Scoville Award in 2023.  Learn more.
