Overview

Making the transition from years of training into the world of practice as a new surgeon can be daunting.  In addition to many new responsibilities (choosing a city in which to work, signing a contract, potentially hiring staff, etc.) young surgeons are also still learning how to become a surgeon.  This conference will facilitate informal discussion among peers ranging from residents to surgeons in their first few years of practice.

Topics will center around:

  • selecting the correct practice for oneself
  • the logistics of setting up this practice
  • common complications and mistakes for young surgeons
  • marketing, social media
  • coding and billing for the new surgeon
  • interpersonal relationships
  • many other topics critical to becoming the best young surgeon possible

For example, young surgeons are prone to keep their complications quiet as they don’t want to tarnish their young reputations. This forum will accelerate learning for young surgeons and improve the care of their patients. Discussions about practice set-up will help bring to the forefront issues that some young surgeons are not aware of.  Understanding the issues will help young surgeons set up a more efficient practice.

The Young Surgeons Conference Series is targeted towards surgeons in their fellowships, and in their first 3 years of practice. Senior level residents, pre-med and medical students interested in spine surgery are also welcome to attend.
